Caring for Your Piece
Everyday Wear
Remove your jewelry before swimming, cleaning, or exercising. Chlorine and household cleaners can damage gold and platinum, and lotions, perfume, and hairspray can dull a stone's surface. Put your jewelry on last, after everything else.
Cleaning
Soak your piece in warm water with a few drops of mild dish soap, then brush gently with a soft toothbrush, paying attention to the back of the stone where buildup collects. Rinse in a bowl rather than over an open drain, and dry with a soft, lint-free cloth. Avoid ultrasonic cleaners at home, especially for colored gemstones, since vibration can loosen settings.
Gemstones
Diamonds, sapphires, and rubies are among the hardest stones and hold up well to daily wear. Softer or more delicate stones, such as emeralds, opals, and pearls, need extra care: protect them from knocks, heat, and chemicals, and clean them only with mild soapy water and a soft cloth. Many emeralds are treated with oil, so they should never go in an ultrasonic cleaner.
Storage
Store each piece separately in its box or pouch. Diamonds can scratch other jewelry, and even gold can scratch against itself. When traveling, keep your pieces padded in their own case.
Check-ups
We recommend having your jewelry inspected every six months, so loose prongs and worn settings are caught early. Contact us at sales@zacharyjude.com to arrange cleaning or an inspection.
